Link Sharing

These days' people do link sharing to increase the page rank and link popularity. This way any search engine going to one site will also get references about the other linked site. This way a site linked to another site having good ranking will also gradually get an increase in its ranking as more and more people visit that site and click on it.

But more important thing is that great care should be taken while putting a link. A user has to use good anchor-text key words. By good text key word I mean a keyword which is more often searched on search engines. Please note that one key word that is important for one search engine may not be important for other search engines also because the criteria of one search engine is different from other search engines.

For getting good keywords for all search engines I strongly recommend you to visit www.keywordfindertool.com which will give you thousands of top key words for every search engine.

The anchor text that you use, should reflect the keywords of which you are trying to get a higher listing for. It should also accurately describe what information will be found on the next page if you click on the link.

Advice On Using The Following Two Keywords

If you search the internet for the word "Quality" you will find about one billion or more results; 449,970,277 at MSN, 709,000,000 at Yahoo and 1,830,000,000 at Google. The supply of quality is guaranteed, you might say. But now the demand for quality.

Overture provides for the month march 2006 328,191 searches for quality. The highest number is 69,240 (Quality Inn) and followed by Quality itself (35,245).

If you would translate these figures you might come up with the idea that the demand for quality is highly overrated. "Luxury" on the other hand is relatively much more wanted; it receives 137,000,000 responses (Google) and 1,342,000 searches (Overture). This gives a ratio of about hundred (102) whereas the previous ratio – the number of quality supplied divided by the number searched for is about 5,484.

Altogether, this seems more than strange. For quality you would imagine that when people talk and write about it (including this article producer) it should also be important. Reality shows however, that people hardly search for it.

The other thing which is interesting is the fact about "luxury" which is relatively much more demanded through the internet. This is interesting because of the character of luxury goods, they should be somehow scarce, exclusive and hard to find. These are characteristics that do not really match the character of the internet, which is open, abundant and ubiquitous.

So, if you are using "quality" as a keyword you can do without, and if you are using "luxury" as a keyword you might consider increasing the price of your product.

Impending Changes In The Seo World

The sky isn't falling chicken little, but your traffic may be in the near future.

There is no question that Google has been a dominating force. There is also no question that Microsoft has both the financial and the manpower resources to give them some serious competition and probably eventually get the upper hand again. As Google has grown to a size comparable to that of Microsoft, it has lost much of the "little guy trying harder" appeal that once helped to create a great deal of it's public support.

Many users don't really care which search engine they use as long as they are getting the results that they're looking for. In this area, Google is falling seriously behind. In an attempt to filter out more of the web sites using artificial means to improve their ranking, they have knocked a large number of legitimate web sites out of the SERPs and often prevented newer web sites from appearing to begin with. While I applaud their effort to combat the web sites using spam techniques to climb above legitimate web sites, I can say with out a doubt that unless they find a better way to do this they will begin loosing market share in a big way. There are several reasons, some of which are not so obvious:

  • People want relevant and timely results. If Google continues to delay newer web sites and web pages from ranking for applicable terms, users will go elsewhere to find more up to date results.
  • Many web site owners using Google AdSense will begin switching over to competing services from Yahoo and MSN — which they are likely getting traffic from. Since the ads are a source of revenue for these web site owners, they are going to deal with the search engines that are helping them make more money.
  • Many web site owners will remove the Google site-search from their web sites since they aren't getting traffic from Google.
  • Web savvy people are often asked for advice from those who are not as proficient with computers. It won't take too many bitter web site owners telling these people to use a competing search engine before Google starts to see the effects in their bottom line.
  • Microsoft has been developing Windows Vista, in fact, the beta version has already been released. Microsoft will put a serious dent in Google's business with this because they have built a handy little search box right into the operating system.
For those of us that are forward thinking enough to prepare for this shift, the next six to eighteen months should be very rewarding. For everyone else (especially those relying entirely on traffic from Google) it will be somewhat like riding off the edge of a cliff in a Mini Cooper. So, what can be done to prepare?

  • Diversify your internet marketing strategy. Search engine optimization should only be a fragment of your internet marketing. For starters, you could consider advertising on other relevant web sites, utilizing a pay-per-click campaign and publishing articles on other web sites.
  • Plan for the adoption of new technology. Blogs are here to stay and RSS is taking hold. Stay on top of new and innovative ways to use technology to multiply the effectiveness of your search engine optimization campaign. You can get a general idea of what technologies to look at by staying up to date with the advances in operating systems, browsers and related software and hardware.
  • Avoid using spam techniques to improve your ranking, such as hidden text, keyword stuffing, or link spamming. Most of these questionable techniques don't work and those that do don't work well & and you risk having your web site banned.
  • Update your web site on a regular basis. A web site that is constantly growing is viewed by the search engines as more important, a side benefit is that by generating useful content other web site owners will have a reason to link to your web site.

Get Listed In Google In 24 Hours

So, you launched your new site. And you are waiting for the traffic to come. An waiting, and waiting, and waiting,…

It currently takes Google 6 to 9 months to index any new site. Yes, 6 to 9 months and that is not to rank that is just to be indexed. As a site owner you can't wait that long. You can pay for search engine submissions but what if there was a FREE way to accomplish the same thing. And to have it take affect quickly.

Yes, there is a FREE way and it doesn't involve any complicated programming or massive amounts of your time.

Find websites in your category and at least one that is a Page Rank of 5 or higher and get them to exchange links with you. It is that simple. I've found this also works well with sites that have been live for a while but aren't indexed.

How To Get Indexed By Google And Alexa Aka How To Get Ranked By Google And Alexa

I started a new site 10 days ago. As any other webmaster would do, I went to various "submit your site" websites and attempted to submit my website to the promised 100's of search engines.

I got confirmation for some... nothing for others.... eventually I got tired of it. Whenever I went to google or alexa and typed my url in, nothing happened.

So I went and did some snooping around, and found a way to submit my site and get it indexed very fast.

I read about this problem online and I found out it takes a few weeks before the bots from Google or Alexa get sent to your page to index it.

For google:

Go to http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl and submit your site url eg (http://www.onebillionviews.com)

Then go to www.google.com and search for your full url

You will get a message something like this : your search had no results ..try clicking on the link directly.. and wil provide you with your url as a link

Click on it

Wait an hour or so ... be patient :).

Then search for your url again on google and voila :).

Your site is indexed by google. It shows as the only result with your url (obviously) but it's a nice feeling.

For Alexa

Go to http://pages.alexa.com/associates/sitereport.html and submit your page url and email for review. A bot gets sent out to your url and looks at your content, your links and so on.

You'll get a report (usually within a day) on your email about your site (broken links, sites that link to yours).

And a week after, you'll see your ranking on Alexa (hence you'll be indexed too.)

Rough Guide To Basic Seo Matters

What's to be discussed below are just systematized guidelines that worked fine for me and many others on a great load of high competition keywords for quite a bunch of sites. What I'm perfectly sure of is that they might and most likely will eventually make YOUR site a success, provided you don't treat these lines as tables of stone and realize that really a lot depends on your specifics like level of competition in your niche market, your potential audience and generally this little thingy called brain (I guess I should have placed this on top of the list:).

Build QUALITY content.

When you ask somebody what really matters for search engines in the first place and somebody starts speaking of the so-called "key factors" such as meta tags, page title, anchor text, keyword density, header elements, alt tags, etc – tell him he's talking rubbish, those things are never determinative.

Although undoubtedly important they are SPAM in nature WITHOUT QUALITY CONTENT. Long before your site is done start piling up notes or REAL content of at least 200-500 words for each page and make sure the content is what general audience will like. Make your articles up-to-date and topical, don't use any sorts of nerd computer lingo or flamboyant and ostentatious lexemes. You can inundate your site with "widgety widgets" on every line of your code, cramming it into every anchor text on every FFA (free-for-all) link site you might find – but if you DON'T HAVE QUALITY CONTENT you are offering SPAM to visitors and your site will be butchered one way or another, today or tomorrow. It's much better not having a site at all then entering the web with spam. There's enough of this bullocks on the web already – don't add to the dump!

Cleanly Interlinked Internal Pages With Proper Anchor Text.

Rule of thumb – each page on your site should not be further than 3 clicks away from any other site page. Bots like easily crawlable sites, and you get more traffic because all internal pages get indexed and PageRank calculation is facilitated. Plus humans that use Internet as well now and then don't like to waste their precious time finding what they want or scraping through your clandestine navigation. In this eye this rather looks to be a matter of website usability but as long as Google PageRank nowadays remains next to unbeatable factor in getting more visitors from Google (write Yahoo and AOL) and Google holds 90-92% market share, I would suspect it is cleanly interlinked with SEO as well. Plus proper anchor text, although slightly devalued lately, might help you get your internal pages right. By proper I mean SPAM-PROOF in the first place. Don't make anchor text 10 words long topping it up with keywords – search engines get wise with this old trick.

Keep Your URLs Clean - Stay Away From SessionID's.

Each time the bot (GoogleBot, Inktomi and Scooter in particular) spiders a page of your site it gives it some sort of associated ID number and stores it in the some sort of repository for future use (for instance for further PageRank calculation as true of Google). That unique ID is associated with the url that the bot saw when it spidered the page. BUT: when it eats into the same (in human eye!) page next time the URL IS DIFFERENT!

?sessid=999&xyz=123 IS NOW REPLACED BY ?sessid=999&xyz=124. The troubles that you'll face are immense:

1) This leads the bot into thinking: - Aha, this page might be spam as it duplicates the content of ?sessid=999&xyz=123 completely! There's no harder penalty nowadays then PR0 Google massacre and the main factor that triggers it is content duplication.

2) Sessionid's is a surefire way to nip PageRank transfer to internal pages in a bud. Google PageRank calculation is multi-iterative and at each iteration (exact number of which is kept secret but IMHO hardly exceeds 50-60) GoogleBot assigns some of PageRank share to a DIFFERENT page i.e. a page with DIFFERENT SESSIONID! Thus PageRank is not accumulated and internal pages remain bare.

Whatever visitor tracking functionality you need – don't go for sessionid's in urls – God forbid! Either use .htaccess for these purposes or more complex server side solutions using IP address, user agent, visitor OS info, cookies info etc. for visitor identification.

Frameset Sites Are Both Feet In The Grave.

If somebody claiming to be a bigwig designer, developer, or usability pro suggested you a frameset structure for your site – just say goodbye and never refer to the chap again. If however this suggestion was later approved and implemented – you are in a big jam. Bots loath frames and 99,999% sure WON'T follow "frame src" urls which they view as either duplicate content or spam in any other way. Say thanks to malicious blackhat "optimizers" that used this technique for years for duplicating their content on all possible affiliated and non-affiliated sites. Also you just won't believe how many 12-year-olds stick yahoo, ebay, microsoft or amazon frames into their FrontPage juvenilia! Do you think the bots will bother spidering those? At the certain point of time due to abundance of spam from frames it just became easier for bots to ignore framesets at all. And yes, someone would probably bother with noframes tag to include text and links there, but in my view it's just not worth it. Frameset site owners should forget it and rebuild your site structure from scratch. Framesets should go to the dustbin.

Title, Keyword Density, Metas, Headers, Alt Tags.

Aha, back to old webmaster tricks now. Everybody knows about meta tags nowadays – don't think you're the only one. What most of them don't know is that nowadays most of them are COMPLETELY USELESS or at least MUCH LESS WEIGHT than before. Too many clever buggers deluging too many pages with too much spam in the metas – how would you protect the web from spammy sites of the kind by means other than just ignoring? Basically you must always keep in mind that all onsite SEO factors must be kept modest rather than ostentatious. "Underdensity" of keywords in the body and underuse of keywords in metas, alt tags, title will do you much less harm than overuse and "ovedensity". This is the general rule of the thumb. But how do you find the optimal balance? Densitywise, I would belive it ranges somewhere between 5-12%, but I personally never exceeded 7-8% with the sites I was good at for some really competitive keywords. Once in title, once-twice in description, once in headers, once-twice high on the page, might try a few times in the keywords in different variations. This is the approach that worked for me on some really tough keywords in the IT industry where every other one is somewhat clever about search engines.

Javascript navigation does more harm than good.

Whatever they are saying – Google doesn't parse javascript navigation. It takes so much calculation resources, plus so many keep their JS files external – Google has got other 3-4 billion pages to see to instead of wasting time and Google developer's effort on going deep into each individual JS navigation case. However, when this seems to be the only navigation option (which seems a lame excuse to me) – be kind enough to arrange a clean href for sitemap preferable high enough on the page with plain href links for all pages you want indexed.

What you need to be conscious of now BEFORE taking the plunge for it all is that just following these guidelines won't make you and your online business cash flow positive. Now and not then is the time to contemplate proper "reaping the fruit" approach. Converting traffic into customers and eventually staggering bank account numbers is a much more challenging task then just making your site visible on search engines – but this is a topic for a completely different story.

Blogging Chocolate Purses Counterfeit Handbags Amp Purse Riots For Seo

Chocolate purses? Did I read that correctly? Back alley bags? Terrorism funding with fake couture? Designer purse riots? They can't be true! But wait, the news is true, it absolutely is! And what is this? A diamond thief snatches a designer handbag from a sexy starlet! And then comes a story about designer cell phones to carry in that fashionable handbag! This is what I love about web marketing and my work as a search engine optimization specialist - the fun and novelty of research.

Let's take a step back here and clarify. Why would a web site owner seeking increased search engine visibility care about news related to their products? In a word, CONTENT. I always recommend to new clients that they start a blog discussing their industry and their products and post to it several times a week. Post what? Anything and everything about their product or service belongs in their blog. Content is king and blogs are a great place to routinely add relevant, interesting, search engine friendly content.

But my clients wonder where I come up with this stuff - It's in the news.

The day I signed on to increase the search visibility of an online retailer of designer handbags and fashion accessories, I went to Google news http://news.google.com and typed "Designer Handbags" into the search box. As I scrolled down the page of resulting stories, I saw a link to a press release discussing the new pink Juicy Couture Sidekick phone and PDA from T-Mobile. Bingo! First blog entry at the client blog http://Valuebags.com (recommended to the client that day) where I recapped the story and posted a photo.

Then I scrolled to the bottom of that Google News page to look for the link that says, "New! Track new stories about designer handbags & create an email alert" I clicked the link under "create an email alert" and entered my email address for this "Designer Handbags" news search, just like I do with each new client and their product. Every day I receive a list of news stories that turned up in a news search for "Designer Handbags" to discuss on the client blog.

Within a few days I got my daily email alert from Google News that talked about, I kid you not, Chocolate Designer Handbags! So I clicked the link in the email to land on a news story about a high end chocolatier that makes tiny little replicas of designer purses in rich, flavored chocolate, complete with tiny bows and straps! There's the next post to the client designer handbag blog. What fun! But this can't go on, really - how much news can there be about trendy, high priced purses?

Next comes an email news alert about sexy starlet Tara Reid, who was robbed in a Spain airport of her Balenciaga designer handbag filled with over $180,000 in jewels! The news seems filled with stories about haute couture bags, but really, can this continue at this rate? Yes, indeed it can. Next day brings news of a shop proprietor on the lamb after he is caught running a fake designer handbag boutique in Brownsville, Texas. He disappeared after his wife died, on the run to avoid prison time.

Just incredible, there really can't be more, can there? Yes, it seemingly never ends, as I got a news alert in the email the next morning about a RIOT by ravenous customers hungry for limited numbers of designer handbags on steep discount at a Maryland boutique! Police had to stop as many as 1000 women fighting over the bags when the boutique owner couldn't stop them from wrecking the store.

There's more! Here's a story about the size of the fake couture market, currently estimated to be approximately $450 BILLION yearly! That is some sizable change carried by a lot of fake purses. It is estimated that in New York alone, losses run $500 million a year to designer knockoffs. This booty attracts organized crime and it is suspected that substantial terrorism funding is raised by designer handbag counterfeiting.

Clearly I've made my point here. If you seek higher search engine ranking for your products and services and are willing to post some comments regularly to your company blog on news in your industry, there are no shortage of topics to discuss. A headline like "$1.4 Million Designer Handbag Counterfeit Scam - Four Arrested" doesn't appear every single day does it? That one ran recently at Boston.com and was in an email alert.

But what if it's a slow news day and there are no headlines on your product today to discuss on your blog? OK, it does happen, especially if you are in the software industry or industrial supply or if you deal in some other esoteric minutia. Then what to blog about? Your clients, vendors, suppliers or customers make for excellent content and in some cases may happily provide you with their latest news release to post on your blog. You can detail business or sales trips, discuss jobs in your industry, or even put up copies of your own latest email promotions, press releases, or even your office decorating plans.

Sale promotions, coupon codes, and specials for blog readers only - all contribute to a popular and visible blog in your industry. If you post often, use keyword phrases liberally in your text and hyperlink that keyword text to relevant information or sales pages of your products from the blog, you will increase the search engine ranking of your main site over time.

As a male with little interest in designer purses and handbags, I knew I could effectively market this client simply by signing up for "Designer Handbags" Google News alerts and gathering those news headlines and commenting on the client blog. I never thought that Gucci, Prada, Hermes, Vuitton, Furla, Fendi and Ferragamo handbags would become an item of interest to me - and they're still not - so Google News alerts comes to the rescue.

Clients however, often find that they become extremely interested in those news alerts, have no trouble commenting about them on their blog, and soon come to enjoy the process and happily take it on as a regular task in their web marketing. They are already experts on their product and hearing more about their industry in daily news stories and commenting about it in their blog becomes a pleasant daily task.

Did you know you could buy designer handbags at Walmart's Sam's Club stores? "Regional Manager Matt Lindsey said "They don't come into Sam's Club looking for affordable luxuries, but once they see it and they can afford it, they're happy with it." Coach, Prada, Kate Spade, and Fendi handbags are available in (Sam's Club) stores."

From Rochester, NY TV news station WHAM channel 13 web site. Truth is stranger than fiction. You couldn't make this stuff up!

Part 1. Wordtracker for keywords.

A problem for all new webmasters has always been SEO or search engine optimisation.

The problem starts with the age-old question of how do I design my website so people can find it?

Lets assume that you have an idea for a website that will enable you to make a bit of extra cash, you have a product of your own or you have an affiliation you believe in and you want to make sure that the people searching for your product will find your site over your competitors. How do you start?

Step 1
KEYWORDS
Finding the right keywords for your product is vital, the right keywords on your site will mean the difference between being found and not being found. How do we find these keywords and how do we use them?

First stop is a visit to wordtracker.com Using the trial version should be enough.

Let's say that you sell widgets, type widget into the box and you will get this; 1. widget
2. apple
3. Apple
4. widgets
5. synastry
6. Macintosh
7. security

Clicking on the word widget on the top of this list will bring up another list that contains the word widget.

Lets take a look at the top 5 on that list.

The table contains the following information:

Count - This shows the number of times a particular keyword has appeared in our database. E.g. Our database currently holds 373 million words. A count of 147 tells us that this particular word has appeared 147 times out of 373 million (this is over a two-month period).

Predicted - This is the maximum total predicted traffic for all of the major search engines/pay per bids and directories. It is based on the current 24-hour period.

Dig - When you perform any kind of search in the keyword universe, you can now dig down to the next level. E.g. search for 'gambling'. Then, when you click on 'online gambling', just the results for 'online gambling' come up, click on 'online gambling in states' and so on. Great for focusing on niches.

Clicking on each word again adds it to your basket. The next step is to compare these keywords in order to find the best keyword for you,

You are looking for a keyword with a high KEI or Keyword Effectiveness Index, what's this?

In a nutshell: Look for the keywords near the top. The higher the KEI, the more popular your keywords are, and the less competition they have. Which means you have a better chance of getting to the top.

Now you have found your high KEI ranking keywords you have to sprinkle them about your home page and insert them into you meta-tags. The next article in this series will discuss meta-tags, using the title tag, and basic page design that will give your visitors a pleasing site to look at.

All About Seo Or Sfo

First let's start with definitions:

SEO: Search Engine Optimization, SFO: Search Friendly Optimization.

These two things are what most webmasters have trouble balancing. These things seem to always be on opposite ends. On one hand you have to make sure search engines can crawl your website without any problems. On the other you have to keep the site looking good to keep your visitors.

These are all based on what kind of site you plan on making. A corporate website selling shoes in the real world might focus on keeping the site looking good to visitors. And maybe pack it up with flash and all kinds of descriptive images. On the other side a site about online products, e-commerce, might cut back on the images and focus on seo. I will go into both of these just in case.

Let's start with seo. The first thing you need if you choose seo is to meta tags. Now there many meta tags generators out there for a quicker way to make them. But I suggest like me you make them yourself according to the search engines you want your site to better perform at. In short you have to study those search engines and find out how they get their content and what meta tags they require or may find usefull. Mine is based on google so check out the source of the blog and those are the tags that google uses.

Also a site that may help you out with your seo is: http://sitesubmit.ca/ they require you to be a member to use their tools but it's worth plus it's free. They have many seo tips and tools. In your reaserch of the search engine don't forget ranking. Find out what they base their search results on and how they decide which results show up first when a user queries. Like google uses google googlerank and overall page rank. But you may hav eto increase your content on a subject in order to increase your keyword density and such.

Second sfo. SFO is fairly easy to accomplish once you have the right info. Like many sites they host regular polls and surveys about what users like and their personnal opinions. It's an effective way of knowing your audience. Once you know most of your visitors like certain kinds of things you start providing them. Therefore pleasing your users and making a successful site. But never forget about the stalistics the users don't need to tell you. Like what browsers usually visit your site and what operatinf systems they use. And as many webmasters know firefox and internet exploer(leading browsers) have different rendering engines. So find out which most of your users use and customize your site to it. Also if the stalistics show that they have just about equal users use what we a splash page. To allow the user to show which version of the site they want to view. Two versions of your site may be hard to keep up but remember it's worth it. In one case one of my friends had to do four different versions. And keep them updated at the same time.

But also you may have to balance the two together if you want them both. Though it is hard it may be for the best.

Is Overnight Seo Success Still Possible

As the owner of a search engine optimization company, I have seen the SEO industry evolve a great deal over the years but never more dramatically than it is right now. Lately I have noticed signs that the "free ride" of getting easy website traffic from search engines is coming to an end. And that has caused many optimizers and website owners to ask themselves, "Is overnight SEO success still possible?"

In the early years (very early), it sure seemed like it was. One could simply add a bunch of keyword meta tags and get almost instant results. Then, meta tags were out and doorway pages were in.

The next fad was links from any and all sites, the more the better. When relevancy in links became a factor, many webmasters rushed to get link scripts installed and set up link directories with relevant categories.

Then content got a good run for a while. And most recently, text link ads (paid links) became all the rage.

Paid Links: The Straw That Broke Google's Back?

As soon as link popularity became the holy grail of SEO and webmasters began learning how to artificially increase it with paid links, Google began working on filters to stop ranking manipulation. It also seems to have inspired the rumored "aging delay" in which new sites on newly registered domains face long waits to get indexed by the grand daddy of all engines.

While catching cheaters is a good thing, a lot of legitimate, quality sites are also getting caught up in Google's new fishnet. There is plenty of grumbling among webmasters who report waiting up to nine months to appear in the Google rankings for even the most obvious keywords such as their company name.

Yes, getting top rankings in Google is definitely a lot harder (and slower) than it used to be. This is partly because more sites are being indexed and the sheer volume of competition is making it tougher to rise to the top. But that's only part of the picture.

Google and the other engines are hell bent on preventing rankings manipulation, and since they hold all the cards, we'd better learn to play the game by their rules. And that, funnily enough, could mean going back to some of the "no brainer" promotional methods in use four or five years ago, when many of us took our businesses online for the first time. Back then, we did things like distributing articles and press releases and buying ads in relevant publications - not for the incoming links but for the visibility, traffic and credibility they generated. It just made sense.

With overnight SEO success a thing of the past, online business owners/operators not only have to change tactics - they also need to adjust their expectations.

Keeping SEOs on Their Toes

Responsible and workable SEO these days means not wasting your time or money trying to trick the search engines into ranking you highly for keyword phrases that you have no business ranking for in the first place. That's why it's so important before signing on with any optimization company to discuss these new expectations with them. You need to be an informed consumer because there are still SEOs living in the (very recent) past and still deeply committed to paid linking schemes, keyword stuffing, etc.

Now more than ever you as an SEO client need to investigate the optimization companies you're considering. That means pumping them for details not just about their proven results but about their methodology such as keyword selection and link popularity before you pay the deposit.

Another reality check: SEO is going to be a tad more expensive in this new world (unless you are among the few who have the time, skills and resources to do it yourself). Reaching your target audience with interesting and compelling information about your industry is now the best way to achieve link popularity. But it's definitely not as easy, fast or cheap as buying 100 site-wide text link ads or swapping links willy nilly.

If you don't have the resources to produce regular copy about your business or industry, hiring an optimization company that has content writers to do the research and writing for you is probably your best bet. The benefits of greater link popularity AND visibility will be worth it over the long haul.

In Conclusion...

SEO continues to evolve, which these days means we all need to accept that getting top ten placements for competitive terms will not happen overnight nor in one month or even two.

Your task as a responsible SEO consumer is to do careful due diligence in selecting an optimization company. Be wary of any SEO that offers a quick fix, uses dubious tactics, and guarantees #1 rankings. Expect your optimization results to improve gradually over time.

No, overnight SEO success is no longer a reality for competitive keyword phrases but don't let that get you down. It's still worth doing... only now it's worth doing well.

Anyway, the alternative - doing nothing - isn't really an option. It reminds me of a saying hanging on the wall in my karate class: "While you are sleeping, someone else is training to kick your...."

How To Get Listed With Google In Less Than 24 Hours

Firstly the truth, you do not need some miracle to get listed in google in less than 24 hours. Getting listed in google in under a day can actually be quite easy and in this article I'll show you exactly how to do it.

Firstly what we mean by your site getting indexed is when it shows up on the google search engine. To find out if you website is listed enter www.yourdomain.com into the search box. You will see "no results" appear, which means our website is new and its not in google's index. Google doesn't know your site exists, therefore it cannot be ranked.

So we must first get into their index, when we do, you should see your website title, description and url appear. Then your website is indexed by google. So how do we do this?

Firstly do not use google's submission form. This method takes about 5 weeks to be indexed.

What you need to do is enter a few keywords related to the website you want to index. You should see a whole list of websites related to your own. What you need to do next is download a google toolbar; this will show you the page rank of each page in the search engine. You can download the toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com

You need to look down through these related websites, paying particular attention to the page ranks. Try and find a webpage with a rank of 5 or higher. If you can convince 1 page rank 5 to link with you, your website will be listed in roughly 3 to 4 days. To get your site listed in less than 24 hours, get 1 website with a page ranking of 6 to link with you. That's it, no miracles. It works!

The Search Doesnt End At Your Homepage

In a recent report for a new client, I wrote:

"Remember, a visitor's search doesn't end when they leave Google. Their search and the phrases associated with it continue right through to the completion of the task they have in mind."

Many of us pay attention to the keywords and phrases being used by our visitors when they arrive via a search engine. It makes sense not only because it gets you higher rankings, but also because the use of the right search terms signals to your reader that your page is relevant to them. In other words, your heading and intros are directly relevant to their search.

But all too often, once those key phrases are in place, we think the job is done. Not so.

There are other key points on your homepage where getting the phrase right can make a big difference.

Here's what I mean.

Let's say you are working on two pages; the homepage and a second level page. Working with your site logs and a tool like WordTracker, you optimize the homepage with the best keywords and phrases you can find. And that's great. You now have text that is relevant to your visitor's search.

But here's something else you can do...

Use the same process to identify the best words for the links from your homepage to the second level page.

Simply go through the same process with that second page. Use your logs and a keyword tool to find the most relevant terms for that page.

And then use one of those terms in the link from your homepage.

Do you get the idea? The core of this process is to recognize that your visitor hasn't completed their 'search' when they arrive at your homepage. The search is just the beginning. Part of your task is to understand how best to write the links that take people deeper into your site. And one way of maximizing that clickthrough is to use terms that are directly relevant to the visitor's continuing search.

SEO helps us focus on writing in ways that are directly relevant to the task our visitors have in mind. My point is, don't consider the job completed when you have optimized the homepage or any particular landing page. Use the same approach, the same way of writing, to help that visitor all the way through to the moment when they complete their task, whatever that may be.

Put in the simplest manner possible, organic SEO is search engine optimization done manually using no black hat methods, no underhand methods and no automated scripting. It is the purest form of optimizing your website for the benefit of search engines, while still retaining interest for your site visitors, and done well it is exactly the thing that search engines are looking for in a website. Once they find it they will reward your site with better rankings and improved positions within the search engine results pages. Throughout the course of this article it will be referred to as simply SEO.

Understanding The Search Engines

Understanding Search Engines and their general concept is vital to the use of effective SEO methods. Search engines enable their visitors to enter a specific word or term, known as keywords. Once submitted, all pages containing those keywords that can be found in the search engine's directory are listed on the search engine result pages. Each page is "ranked" according to relevancy, popularity and a few other factors. Therefore, in theory, the more relevant a page is to a given keyword the more likely it will appear at the top of the listings.

Introducing The Search Engine Spiders

Another important factor to remember about search engines is that they don't use real people to crawl the billions of websites and judge how relevant they are. Instead they use automated software called a "spider" or a "bot" that does this work much quicker. The calculations that the search engine uses to determine the ranking of a website are called algorithms and in the case of the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN these algorithms are changed on a regular basis. The changes and the specifics of the algorithms are not released to the public in order to prevent black hat SEOs from manipulating their sites to reach the top of the pile despite containing to information relevant to the search query or keyword.

Optimizing For Search Engines – Optimizing For Visitors

Of course to some extent, all of us reading this article are probably guilty of altering our web pages to meet the whims of search engines but it must be done in a positive and organic way. We understand that optimizing a page purely for the benefit of search engines spiders may massively detract from the actual value of the site to your visitors. Search engines understand this too, hence the evolution of the algorithms. With each new algorithm created and usually patented by search engines like Google, we are getting closer to a structure whereby sites are genuinely judged on their value to visitors. It may sound like an Isaac Asimov novel but the algorithms and the spiders are basically becoming more human like.

Basic Components Of SEO

The actual methods of optimizing your website are saved for another article, but the basic components of an SEO campaign are broken down into on page and off page optimization techniques. On page SEO includes factors like keyword inclusion, content optimization, page structure etc… whereas the main contributing factor of off page optimization is inbound links. There are many different factors to each of these areas and different SEOs will give you varying information on which factors are the most relevant to gain higher rankings. These extensive differences in opinion occur because nobody is certain of the algorithm criteria.

The Benefits Of SEO

SEO is probably the most beneficial way to conduct Internet promotion. It is highly cost effective, can yield long term results and the leads it generates are opt in and targeted. This doesn't mean you shouldn't consider trying out alternative methods of advertising your site. For many, banner advertisements, press releases (can actually be used as part of an SEO campaign as well), PPC campaigns and sponsored listings prove to highly beneficial and including these will help your site's popularity.

To Cost Effectiveness And To Life

The cost effectiveness is easily determined when you look at the potential of an SEO campaign compared to the method that many consider to be the next best thing – PPC. A PPC campaign will usually cost you anywhere upward of 5 cents per visitor generated. This means that for every thousand visitors you receive you will have paid $50. Some fairly basic SEO work on a web site containing ten pages will generate this kind of traffic on a monthly basis relatively quickly.

$50 doesn't sound much but consider that you pay this in one month to receive the desired one thousand visitors. Over the space of a year you will have paid $600, and so on. Now consider that you are competing for a relatively competitive keyword and you find that you need to be paying a minimum of 50 cents per click to generate just the one thousand clicks in a month. All of a sudden you're paying $6000 per year and you are still only getting one thousand clicks every month. $6000 will buy you an awful lot of SEO work and you should find that within a few months you are generating a lot more traffic using SEO.

Targeted Leads

Targeted leads are the best type of leads you can generate. It means that the visitors to your site are already predisposed to the basic topic of your site and are interested in what you have to say. It means that they will be more likely to purchase goods or services from your site, click on affiliate links or click Google ads to earn you revenue. Because SEO leads are physically searching for the topic that your site relates to you are guaranteed that they are interested in whatever you're offering. First of all they search using keywords relevant to your site. They then read the description and name of your site and this further compounds their interest in the page in question and click on the link. Already they have become highly susceptible to the message of your web page.

So Remember…

SEO is a webmaster's greatest tool but treated badly it can quickly blow up in your face. By ensuring you stick to the very letter of the law and do not use any underhand methods you should soon benefit from powerful leads that will frequent your site and earn you revenue.

Google Page Rank Explained

Page Rank (PR) is an algorithm used by Google to compute the relative importance of a particular webpage on the internet and assign it a numeric value from 0 (least important) to 10 (most important). This value is calculated through an iterative analysis of the backlinks to the webpage. If webpage A links to webpage B then webpage B would receive 1 "vote" towards their page rank.

Fact: Page Rank is calculated on a webpage by webpage basis not on a website by website basis

The importance of the webpage casting a vote and the total number of outgoing links on the webpage casting a vote are the primary factors which determine how much "voting share " this webpage will transfer to each of the outgoing links on them. Google calculates a webpage's page rank by adding up all of the "voting shares " for that webpage through an iterative calculation.

Page Rank is one of the factors Google utilizes to help determine their Search Engine Ranking Positions (SERP's). It should be noted that this algorithm is only one part of their overall ranking scheme and not necessarily the most important one as many website's would have you believe. The general internet user has no idea about the concept of page rank and are unable to tell what a particular page's PR is unless they have the Google Toolbar installed (or use an online page rank checker). Since page rank is part of Google's search ranking algorithm an understanding of the concept is still important for any webmaster concerned with getting traffic to their site.

Fact: Not all links pointing to a webpage are counted as votes for that webpage

As soon as Google introduced the concept of page rank unsavory webmasters developed ways to manipulate the rankings. These webmasters began creating web pages with the sole purpose of increasing the amount of incoming links pointing to their website.

Common Black Hat SEO Techniques:

  • Link Farms - pages containing long lists of unrelated links set up for the sole purpose of manipulating search engine rankings and page rank
  • Doorway Pages - orphaned webpages either on the same website or distributed throughout the internet stuffed with keywords containing links to the offender's site. Used to artificially inflate the back link count for a website.
  • Free For All Links Pages - a type of link farm where, as the name implies, anyone is free to post their link. Once a valuable way to spread the word about your website, abuse through auto submissions has rendered these sites worthless and are now viewed as search engine SPAM.
  • Automated or Hosted Link Exchanges - sites that offer to provide "hundreds" of back links to your site instantly. Generally you will have to install some html code on your website to display their directory and in return anyone else who has this code installed on their website will be displaying your link. This is a case where "if it sounds too good to be true it is". The search engine's are wise to this technique and watch for unnatural "spikes" in the number of backlinks pointing to a website. In actuality it is possible to inflate your page rank with this technique but if the search engine's wise up to your practices (and they always do eventually) you risk being dropped from their index or black holed in their rankings.

How is Page Rank Calculated?

When Google introduced the concept of page rank they published the algorithm they were going to use to calculate it. The formula in it's current form is known only to the engineers at Google but it is fair to say it closely resembles the following formula.

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))

While at first glance this equation can seem daunting, in actuality the concept is not that hard to understand. Let's take a minute to break down the formula and see what conclusions can be drawn.

PR(t1)...PR(tn) - the page rank (PR) of each page from page t1 to tn. (each value of t represents 1 link to webpage A)

C(t1)...C(tn) - the number of outgoing links (C) on each page from page t1 to tn

d - damping factor

Quoting from the original Google Page Rank white paper:

The parameter d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1. We usually set d to 0.85.

Knowing what these parameters mean and knowing the value of the damping factor we can simplify the formula from above:

PR(A) = 0.15 + 0.85*(A "share" of the PR of every webpage linking to page A)

The "share" each webpage passes to webpage A can be computed by dividing the Page Rank of the webpage linking to page A by the number of outgoing links on that page. Each outgoing link on that page would receive an equal voting share from the total available page rank of the page containing the outgoing link. The total available page rank each webpage has available to transfer to outgoing links is a little less than the total page rank of that page (PR of page * 0.85) which can be easily derived when the damping factor is known.<

Implications

Having a basic understanding of the algorithm we can now draw a few conclusions about page rank and it's implications to your website. For instance, it is very possible to have a link on web page X that has a high page rank transferring less page rank voting shares to your website than a link on web page Y with a lower page rank.

How is this possible? Let's analyze an example:

Page X - page rank 4, outgoing links 10

Page Y - page rank 8, outgoing links 100

Page X would transfer 0.85(4/10) = 0.34 page rank voting shares to each outgoing link

Page Y would transfer 0.85(8/100) = 0.068 page rank voting shares to each outgoing link

Even though Page X has a much lower page rank value, due to the fact that the number of outgoing links on Page X is so much smaller than on Page Y it actually transfers more page rank voting shares to each outgoing link than Page Y .

Pages with no links back to them would still have a modest page rank value of 0.15 derived from the (1-d) portion of the equation. It is important to note that while this value holds true according to the equation, only Google engineers are privy to the knowledge of whether actual page rank voting share is transferred in this scenario. Google could easily say that pages with no incoming links transfer a page rank voting share of 0 with a click of a mouse and no one would know for sure except them.

Fact: The Google Toolbar displays Page Rank as a base 10 log scale that is not the "actual" result of the Page Rank calculation

The average page rank of all pages in the index is 1. It is possible to have an "actual" page rank value in the millions or much smaller than 1 using the page rank formula but the Google toolbar only displays integers from 0 - 10 on it's pr meter. Only Google knows how the scale is split up and where the basepoints for each level are. For example, it may take an actual page rank of 10,000 using the formula above to achieve a page rank of 4/10 on the toolbar scale.

Page Rank in Complex Networks

The example above does not actually duplicate a real world example since it is only computing the page rank "voting share" of the ffa page in an idealized situation where the page rank of the page is already known. In complex networks with links in and links out of webpages the actual page rank for a webpage cannot be known due to the interdependencies each web page has on one another to calculate their page rank.

Think of it as a "chicken and the egg" situation. The problem can be solved by taking a best initial guess for the page rank value of each webpage in the network and plugging it into the page rank formula. The results of these calculations are then used to calculate the next incremental page rank values for the webpages in the network. This calculation is repeated over and over again until the page rank value approaches a limit. This limit is then the actual page rank for that page. In a complex network like the internet finding the page rank for all webpages can take millions of iterations.

It is also worth noting that when a webpage transfers page rank voting shares to another webpage the page rank of the contributing page is not reduced in any way. There is no actual page rank transfer, only a weighted "vote" is passed to the outgoing links.

Links on webpages with a high page rank and little or no other outgoing links on them but yours will provide the best opportunities to improve your page rank (if that is your goal and it shouldn't be, link for traffic not pr). Make sure to work on your site content and design before approaching other webmasters for links. The bottom line is you need to have a site worth linking to in order to get people to link to it.

Seo For Beginners Part 2 Spiders Are People Too

OK, arachnids are not people, and search engine spiders are not really people, either. But what I'm driving at is that search engine spiders "think" like people. How do I know this? Because human beings wrote them. Any software that does analysis of any kind does so with the intelligence and analytical rules programmed into it by its human developers.

How Humans Comprehend

Imagine that I handed you an article to read that I had printed out. It's about 20 pages long, but I didn't tell you anything about it. Worse, you're going to have to pass a test on the content. Get out your highlighter!

The best reading instructors teach their students to get the context before seriously studying a text like a chapter of a history book or an article. This is because educational research has shown that knowing the general scope of a selection helps human readers comprehend and retain more of the subject matter. By the way, this example is real, not contrived: I used to be a high school teacher and I took a good deal of post-graduate coursework in what is known as "content area reading".

The easiest way to get the general context is to find the title. The next step is to look at section headings. The combination of the two frames the range or scope of the document or chapter. You can also pick up some hints from picture and diagram captions.

Once you know what the document is about, you can begin to dig into the actual text. As you read, you can often discern important or significant points by repetition. That is, content that is paraphrased and rephrased is often very important: The author obviously thought it worth the effort to rephrase the explanation a couple times (or more). [This paragraph contains a clever example, if I don't say so myself: Did you see it?]

How Search Engine Spiders Comprehend

Not too surprisingly, search engine spiders take the exact same approach as humans.

Like human readers, spiders start to get a clue by looking at titles and section headings. On a web page the spiders all look for your title tag, so it certainly pays to create a title for your web page. Furthermore, it pays even more if that title contains keywords.

An Aside: What are "keywords", anyway?

Most search engines ignore the keyword metatag in the HTML of your web pages, so why do web marketers constantly talk about keywords? The reason is that even if you do not use the keyword metatag on your page, you should select several keywords that describe the content of your page, and then make sure those keywords are sprinkled throughout the page multiple times and in a natural-sounding manner.

The places to use keywords include the title (in the h1 HTML tag), heading text (e.g. in h2 tags), alt and title tags for images, and in body text.

These keywords give the search engine spiders a stronger sense of what your page is really about.

Here's an important observation: Ultimately, our goal is not to "trick" the search engine, but rather to help it see clearly what our content is about. Google and the other engines are getting very adept at figuring out artificial keyword sprinkling. Never string keywords or keyword phrases many times in succession. Google, in particular, sees this is a keyword spamming and will exact painful revenge.

There is also speculation that if your keyword-to-content ratio is unnaturally high, the search engines also discount that. I believe that to be quite likely, but "unnaturally high" is a closely guarded secret. The bottom line for me is that if the body text sounds funny because of all the keywords, you've moved into the danger zone. I'll recommend to you the same thing I did to my Advanced Composition students years ago: Read your page aloud. If it sounds odd in any way, rewrite the odd part.

The search engine spider looks for your section heading in—surprise—the HTML heading tags, especially the h1 tag. You should use these tags on your pages, and make sure they contain keywords.

One often overlooked place to insert keywords is in the alt and title tags of images. Although not quite analogous to a caption that a human reader would examine, the spiders nevertheless figure that these tags probably give a hint as to what the image is about (and in normal circumstances, they do). The image, in turn, gives another clue as to what the page is about.

Once the spider provides a pretty good idea what your page is about, the search engine's next job is to figure out whether your site has high quality content.

More Software and Human Similarities

If somebody claims to be an authority on a subject, it is usually prudent to check out the claim—especially if we're going to be hiring them or our money is otherwise involved. We humans generally do this by checking references.

The search engine spiders operate in fundamentally the same fashion. They assume that a site has high quality content on a given subject if other web sites have links pointing to it. In other words, the site is likely good if the references check out.

Google, in particular, has become very sophisticated in its link analysis. For example, if you trade links, the value of the link is diminished somewhat (nobody knows how much for sure). The reason is that if you really have content that I value and I think my site visitors need, I'll link to you without a trade. An unreciprocated link is one of the surest signs of high quality material on the referenced web site.

The search engines have also gotten very careful about paid links. If your link shows up on a link "farm" (a page or site that only exists for the purpose of creating links to fool the search engines), you may find your site banned altogether. Remember the old butter commercial where the lady says, "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!" and then she conjures up a storm? Well, the same is true for the search engines. Get caught trying to fool the spider and she'll bite you.

Forgive the mixed metaphors and just remember the point.

The search engines are also known to discount run-of-site links. Let's say you have a link to your home page on every single page of your monstrously large web site. Even though it might add up to thousands of links, it will have almost zero credibility in terms of boosting your page ranking.

The moral to the story is this: Don't use run-of-site links to boost your ranking. If it is crucial to your site navigation, fine. Just don't do the work creating all those links and expect them to help your page rank at all.

There is one remaining question, namely "Do internal links help? That is, does a link from page "A" of my web site to page "B" boost page B's page rank on Google or any other search engine?

According to my sources, the answer is yes, but only just a little. External links are given a lot more credibility. Unfortunately, external links are substantially more difficult to acquire.

Why Go For Search Engine Optimization

Before explaining the need for search engine optimization it is important to understand the definition of SEO, a term which has become such a hotly debated topic in the world of webmasters. Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is the process of increasing the amount of visitors to a website by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. This is known as SERP or search engine result page. When your webpage ranks high in the search results you get unique visitors. And if the visitor gets the information he/she is looking for then you might expect repeated visitors.

Now let's make one thing clear, websites could be broadly divided into four types:

• Personal sites
• Corporate sites
• Informative sites
• Sites devoted to ecommerce

The first two types can very well exist without any optimization. Why? Simply because they are not looking for unique visitors! But if you have a site especially designed for the purpose of dissemination of information or for ecommerce then you need search engine optimization for better listings in various search engines.

Content is the King

It is often said in the world of webmasters that if you want to drive targeted visitors to your website you should have relevant content. Search Engines look for relevant content when a person makes a search based on a particular keyword. So your website should have relevant content in order to rank high in SERP.

A few more words can be said about the role of content or keywords for achieving high search engine rankings. It is very important that you have the right keywords or key phrases. When we say "right" we mean the most popular keywords that are used by people browsing the web for products or services that you specialize in. 9 Steps To Getting More Shoppers To See Your Amazon Products

This is a topic I haven't seen much information about online. I was shocked, because in the Internet world of 2005, forum posts and articles usually come up for any kind of optimization topic. But it could be that those who are Amazon marketplace merchants are a more select group of internet marketers... and that no one wants to share any of the secrets they've learned, if they've learned any.

Well I'm going to spill the beans, because that's my policy as far as the web goes- what would an info-site be without info-beans?

So here are the basic points about optimizing your Amazon marketplace feed to increase your chances of appearing, or appearing high in search results:

1. The most important elements to optimize are the product title and the 5 search-term fields (search-terms1, search-terms2...)

2. Your product name, if it's already SEO'd on your website and elsewhere, should already be several words long. For example, instead of calling it the 'Mavica CD1000', you should be calling it the 'Sony Mavica CD1000 Digital Camera'. Some might consider it excessive to add 'digital camera' to the end- I don't have any data either way. My experience has been that 4-5 word product names are ok with the search engines.

3. The search-terms fields can only have one word in them, so in this case, a 'keyword' really is just one word. It's up to you whether you'd repeat a word that's already in your title, but since you only get 5, I'd suggest you don't, unless you really can't think of 5 search-terms.

4. To choose keywords for the search term fields: First look at the product's name, brand, model, features, and benefits, running those through the overture search suggestion tool and adwords keyword tool, or some other metatool, if you have one.

5. Which keywords to choose? The most popular words? The most unique words? If you really want to get competitive, see how many competitors you have in the search results for each of these, and occupy a sparsely populated niche. If you want to know the most popular words in your keyword list, run over to Mark Horrel's Keyword Density Analyzer (I think it's inaccurately named but an awesome tool- I'd call it a 'Word Frequency Analyzer'), and paste your whole list in there, don't show stop words, do it 'by frequency'. Now you have a numerical portrait of the most common and most unique words.

6. Stemming: According to Technical Support at SellerCentral (in an email to me 11/16/2005), Amazon's search appliance will take care of plurals and singulars- meaning if you put 'moisture' you don't have to put 'moisturizes'- but does not get any more sophisticated than that- so if you want 'moisturizing' you'll have to use another field for that word.

7. Now experiment- I'd suggest using a combination of general and unique words.

8. To fine tune, search Amazon on the keywords you've targeted, as well as your product names, and see how visible you are.

9. Experiment, tweak, and win!

The Good And The Bad Of Seo From Googles Mouth

In this article I highlight some of the points made during the call so you know what Google thinks.

You know its bad when you take time from your holidays to come into work to attend a conference call. But that's what I did a few weeks ago. You see I had to because I was going to have the opportunity to ask some Google employees specific questions on things that I'd been pretty sure about, but wanted to hear it right from the horses mouth.

The call lasted less than an hour, but in that time I found that there were many things I figured were indeed true. So lets start with the most obvious:

Is PageRank still important?

The short answer is yes – PageRank has always been important to Google. Naturally they couldn't go into details but it is as I suspected. Google still uses the algorithm to help determine rankings. Where it falls in the algo mix, though, is up for speculation. My feeling however is that they've simply moved where the PageRank value is applied in the grand scheme of things. Are dynamic URLs bad?

Google says that a dynamic URL with 2 parameters "should" get indexed. When we pressed a bit on the issue we also found that URLs themselves don't contribute too much to the overall ranking algorithms. In other words, a page named Page1.asp will likely perform as well as Keyword.asp.

The whole variable thing shouldn't come as a surprise. It is true that Google will indeed index dynamic URLs and I've seen sites with as many as 4 variables get indexed. The difference however is that in almost all cases I've seen the static URLs outrank the dynamic URLs especially in highly competitive or even moderately competitive keyword spaces.

Is URL rewriting OK in Google's eyes?

Again, the answer is yes, provided the URLs aren't too long. While the length of the URL isn't necessarily an issue, if they get extremely long they can cause problems.

In my experience, long rewritten URLs perform just fine. The important thing is the content on the page.

That was a common theme throughout the call – content is king. Sure optimized meta tags, effective interlinking and externalizing JavaScript all help, but in the end if the content isn't there the site won't do well.

Do you need to use the Google Sitemap tool?

If your site is already getting crawled effectively by Google you do not need to use the Google sitemap submission tool.

The sitemap submission tool was created by Google to provide a way for sites which normally do not get crawled effectively to now become indexed by Google.

My feeling here is that if you MUST use the Google sitemap to get your site indexed then you have some serious architectural issues to solve.

In other words, just because your pages get indexed via the sitemap doesn't mean they will rank. In fact I'd bet you that they won't rank because of those technical issues I mentioned above.

Here I'd recommend getting a free tool like Xenu and spider your site yourself. If Xenu has problems then you can almost be assured of Googlebot crawling problems. The nice thing with Xenu is that it can help you find those problems, such as broken links, so that you can fix them.

Once your site becomes fully crawlable by Xenu I can almost guarantee you that it will be crawlable and indexable by the major search engine spiders.

Does clean code make that much of a difference?

Again, the answer is yes. By externalizing any code you can and cleaning up things like tables you can greatly improve your site.

First, externalizing JavaScript and CSS helps reduce code bloat which makes the visible text more important. Your keyword density goes up which makes the page more authoritative.

Similarly, minimizing the use of tables also helps reduce the HTML to text ratio, making the text that much more important.

Also, as a tip, your visible text should appear as close to the top of your HTML code as possible. Sometimes this is difficult, however, as elements like top and left navigation appear first in the HTML. If this is the case, consider using CSS to reposition the text and those elements appropriately.

Do Keywords in the domain name harm or help you?

The short answer is neither. However too many keywords in a domain can set off flags for review. In other words blue-widgets.com won't hurt you but discount-and-cheap-blue-and-red-widgets.com will likely raise flags and trigger a review.

Page naming follows similar rules – while you can use keywords as page names, it doesn't necessarily help (as I mentioned above) further, long names can cause reviews which will delay indexing.

How many links should you have on your sitemap?

Google recommends 100 links per page.

While I've seen pages with more links get indexed, it appears that it takes much longer. In other words, the first 100 links will get indexed right away, however it can take a few more months for Google to identify and follow any links greater than 100.

If your site is larger than 100 pages (as many are today) consider splitting up your sitemap into multiple pages which interlink with each other, or create a directory structure within your sitemap. This way you can have multiple sitemaps that are logically organized and will allow for complete indexing of your site.

Can Googlebot follow links in Flash or JavaScript

While Googlebot can identify links in JavaScript, it cannot follow those links. Nor can it follow links in Flash.

Therefore I recommend having your links elsewhere on the page. It is OK to have links in flash or JavaScript but you need to account for the crawlers not finding them. Therefore the use of a sitemap can help get those links found and crawled.

As alternatives I know there are menus which use JavaScript and CSS to output a very similar looking navigation system to what you commonly see with JavaScript navigation yet uses static hyperlinks which crawlers can follow. Therefore do a little research and you should be able to find a spiderable alternative to whatever type of navigation your site currently has.

Overall, while I didn't learn anything earth shattering, it was good to get validation "from the horses mouth" so to speak.

I guess it just goes to show you that there is enough information out there on the forums and blogs. The question becomes determine which of that information is valid and which isn't. But that, I'm afraid, usually comes with time and experience.
